Well, it took me some garage kits too till I realized that diluted colours bring out much better results XD Believe me, some of my oldest kits look almost exactly caked and nasty like yours.
For the primer question... first I used a white primer from Motip. It's not that expensive and it has high coverage [link] I found it on Ebay.
The downside is that I had to do the priming down in the cold and damp cellar and you should use a dust mask or something like that.
Meanwhile I use gesso. I mix it with water and a matte medium and apply it with an airbrush. It has higher coverage than Motip but it's a little bit more expensive. You may also apply it with paint brushes but that takes a little bit of practice.
If you paint your garage kits with airbrush, you should use Motip, but for paint brush gesso definitely is the better choice. There are several gesso brands and maybe you should go for the one that's the most suitable for you
I figure it does take time and practice. Sucks cuz I want all that experience right now XD But it does take time and practice. Should maybe get some little, cheap kits to practice on until I get the hang of it
Oooo very nice!! I would have to figure out where to spray at in my apartment complex. Someone suggested I could use a box as a protector and spray in there. Gotta figure out how to do that gracefully. It's hard to spray both the sides XD I usually wanna do it all at once, but can't rush it! Ohhh yes, that's not good. I always wear something to protect myself
Really? Good to know! Yeah it can be. I have some gesso here that I've been using for a while now, so I have it on hand
